How to Pack Household Items for International Shipping (Free Checklist)

Ocean freight means cranes, containers and weeks at sea. Good packing is the difference between a smooth unboxing and a costly claim.

Materials you'll need

  • Double-wall cartons in small, medium and large sizes
  • Bubble wrap, packing paper and stretch film
  • Strong packing tape and a dispenser
  • Corner protectors and moving blankets
  • Markers and labels

Furniture

Disassemble legs and headboards; bag and tape screws to the item. Wrap wood in blankets then stretch film. Protect corners with cardboard guards.

Electronics

Use original boxes where possible. Remove batteries, wrap screens face-to-face with foam, and fill voids so nothing moves.

Kitchenware & fragile items

Wrap each plate individually and pack vertically like records. Glasses go mouth-down with paper stuffed inside. Mark boxes "FRAGILE — THIS SIDE UP".

The 10-point checklist

  1. Make an inventory list with values.
  2. Photograph valuable items before packing.
  3. Never exceed ~50 lb per carton.
  4. Heavy at the bottom, light on top.
  5. Fill all voids.
  6. Tape every seam (H-pattern).
  7. Label two sides with consignee and phone.
  8. Keep documents and jewellery with you.
  9. Ask us about insurance for high-value goods.
  10. Book professional packing for antiques and large appliances.
